"Hee-hee-hee! This is hilarious! Your face is worth of seeing!" Skull Kid laughed his crazy laugh like he'd just heard the funniest joke in the whole world. Maybe doing nasty things for others was only a sort of funny game for him. Seemed like the Skull Kid would have dropped down from the air it was floating at any minute, but it never happened. Link was looking at himself from the water as confused as he could be. He still didn't understand what had happened. Suddenly he just turned into a deku and it was the Skull Kid's fault for sure. Even the little thief's fairies seemed amused.
Skull Kid still hadn't completely stopped laughing when it started to hover away into a tunnel. Or at least it seemed like a tunnel. The Hylian had already calmed himself down and he wasn't going to let his new form disturb him while taking back his ocarina from the Skull Kid. He needed it back, no matter what.
The lily pad Link had dropped on was pretty close the shore. He could just jump and catch the Skull Kid. So Link jumped. Unfortunately dekus don't jump as long as the humans. Link knew he'd fall into the water. Do dekus swim? Link never had time to figure it out, because when his wooden legs touched the water he jumped from it on the shore. Link was pretty amazed. Again.
He still had much to learn about being a deku...
Link didn't just stand there watching for the little thief escaping from him with his ocarina. He ran after the Skull Kid with his short deku's legs as fast as he could. Another of the Skull Kid's fairies noticed this. The yellow one. Because she was pretty cheeky she decided to stop the boy in a green hat with a nasty style. The fairy flew to the running deku scrub and tried to trip him over. Success.
Actually it was not such a good thing even for the fairy. It didn't notice, that the tunnel was about to get closed by a huge wooden door.
"Sis!" The fairy called as Tael screamed out and decided to fly to his sister. Too late. The door closed just in front of him.
"Skull Kid, wait! I'm still here!" The yellow fairy shouted when she noticed she was left behind. Link got up from the ground still a little dizzy for the hit and was about to fall again when he noticed the yellow sure angry fairy right in front of his face. She was a bit too close.
"Hey!" The fairy retorted, "You just separated me from my brother! How are you going to fix that!?" it complained. She should do it for her work. That good she was in it. The Hylian transformed boy was quiet. That fairy had just tripped him over and now it was complaining to him for leaving behind? It was her own fault!
"Hmph. Because you seems like you haven't thought about it I have a plan. For your luck..." Tael's yellow sister flew to the wooden huge door, "First, you're about to open me this door", it set an order. Link didn't seem like helping the fairy.
The yellow colored fairy started to get a little despair.
"Oh, C'mon! A little girl is asking for help! And you want that thingy back anyway! I can talk to Skull Kid, but now just open the door!" it pleased. Link sighed. He really didn't have a choice. They were both after the Skull Kid, in their own ways. Link came to the door and opened it, for his surprise. He wasn't sure could he do it, since he was just a small deku now. The yellow fairy came right after Link into the tunnel behind the door.
For a while the fairy and transformed boy walked quietly in the long a little dark tunnel, when the winged one on them started to talk again.
"Well... Because we're in the same boat for some time, I think I'm going to help you", it snorted grudgingly, "And my name is Tatl. You'd better remember it!" it retorted to the end. Link finally decided to say something, but it had nothing to do with Tatl's words.
"You don't remind Navi at all."
"Who's Navi?" Tatl wondered. it was a bit confused because the boy finally spoke and because of his words.
"A helpful and kind fairy. Your opposite, I think."
Tatl took offense.
"Do you think all the fairies are the same? And now when you finally decided to speak you should tell your name, if you have one", it snorted.
"It's Link", the Hylian answered shortly.
"Hmh, well, Link then. There's another door you could open."
When Link looked ahead he noticed that it was true. They had just reached a huge door made out of metal. Iron, prehaps. For some reason they were surprisingly easy to open.
Link went in like he'd just arrived at home; With no worries. For Tatl it was a bit confusing. Didn't that boy fear at all? Exactly. Link didn't feel the fear and it was all because of the Triforce of Courage, which's mark was on Link's left hand.
Link and Tatl had arrived to some sort of building. It was all they knew. Inside this building was lots of spinning, wooden cogwheels. They were spinning because of the water flowing in a little some sort of river inside the building.
Link took a few steps more and looked around. What was that place? Tatl let out a scream when the huge metal doors behind them closed up. Link went to the doors and tried to open them again. They didn't They never would. Link didn't care about that. He had no reason to go back there.
On the bottom of the building, where Link and Tatl now were standing (Oh, well... Tatl was flying...) were wooden stairs to the second floor. The boy and the fairy went all the way up and arrived to a huge empty room. Then Link noticed wooden doors with some colorful patterns. The way out! Now they could figure out, where they exactly were! Link took few steps to the door when he heard a little laughing voice behind them.
"You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"
Link turned fast around and saw a man in weird clothes smirking for him. The man had a red hair and a huge bag on his back. It was full of... Masks. After few seconds Link understood he knew this man. He was the Happy Mask Salesman! He had a shop back in Hyrule Castle town! What was he doing here?
Even Link knew the man, he didn't seem to recognize the boy.
"Good evening. I'm the Happy Mask Salesman. I came to this land of Termina to look for new customers", The Salesman begun his story before Link got a word out.
"On my way, a really important mask was stolen from me. Maybe you even met the little thief, Skull Kid already?" the man said smirking, "The case is, that the mask he's wearing is cursed..." the man's smirk changed to a terrible grimace, "And horrible things will happen if he continues using it!" Link guessed, that there were not "But for our luck"-part coming up... It would get even worse. Salesman started to smirk again.
"It's called Majora's Mask. It's dark powers have destroyed many lands and anything better isn't coming up, if that little imp wears the mask."
"That mask..." Tatl suddenly whispered. "I-I didn't know! I had never helped if I'd... knew..."
The Salesman ignored the fairy and came closer to Link.
"I've been watching you... You can get my mask back", the Salesman said suddenly. Link was confused.
"What can I do like this?" He said meaning his new form. The Salesman laughed.
"That little imp stole something from you. If you get it back, I'll change you back."
Link was so relieved. There was a chance to not be a deku for rest of his life!
"But the case is, that I'm a very busy man. I can only stay in this town for three days. You must get my mask back until then."
"What!?" Tatl screamed, "We don't even know where Skull Kid is!"
Salesman didn't care about Tatl's good point.
"I'm sure you're able to do it. Trust me, trust me..." he said laughing a little.
"... Come, Link", Tatl said and flew to the door. Link followed behind watching the weird smirking man, who could return him to normal. The boy turned around and opened the door to a new adventure...
