In another world in the other side of the Twilight Mirror is a place called the Palace of Twilight. And of course in the palace there is a Royal family. Palace of Twilight is not an exception. Today, left from this family is only the princess. But it wasn't always so.
It was about 11 years ago...

"Midna! Stop that, now!" yelled the princess Midna's father. His daughter had just broke an expensive vase. Well, that wasn't any kind of a new... Little Midna was surely a hoyden and didn't obey anyone. Not even her parents. She was always running around and doing some tricks. No-one liked those tricks.
But even Midna was such a stubborn princess after all she had a kind heart. She loved her parents, but did she show it?
No, she didn't.
Well, sometimes there were better days, and sometimes there were some bad days. On those days the king and the queen had to yell a bit more to their headstrong daughter, who answered always with no worries: "Sorry! I was just a bit bored!" Even though Midna's parents yelled much they loved their daughter. It was just a bit difficult to tech her anything. How could she ever rule her people like this?
Midna's parents always told her about that. "You have responsibilities", they said. "Act like a princess!" Unfortunately Midna didn't listen. Or maybe she did, but no-one knew. She just smirked and laughed all-the-time no matter what.

Came the day when the princess finally got to the age of eight. The parents decided to give her some responsibility.
"Listen well", the said. "We are going to a trip to the world behind the Twilight Mirror. You will rule the palace for three days. All by your own."
When the princess heard the part "All by your own" she decided to listen. First time in her life. "What did you say?"
So the parents told her again and the princess got really excited. To whole palace! Hers! For three days! What all could she do...?
Later on that day the princess escorted her parents to the mirror.
"Are you sure you'll make it?" asked the queen. Just to tease her daughter.
"Yes! You two just go and do your things! I'll be a great queen for three days! You'll see!" Answered the self-confident Midna and smirked.
The queen sighed and looked at her daughter. "You'd better do that..." she said and smiled. Then the queen and the kind went trough the mirror and the princess was left all alone. Oh well... There were all her servants and the people of course.
"Yes!!" shouted out the princess. "Finally!!"
Those three days were pretty... How should I say. Horrible. Yes. That would be it. Midna got the rid of responsibilities and acted like... a very stubborn daughter. She broke things and teased her servants who were all so tired. They were almost prying for the king and the queen to come back.
But they didn't.

They didn't return at the fourth day, or the day after that. First the princess was happy. She could rule the palace a little bit longer. But even Midna got worried when the parents even after a month didn't return. The people living in the twilight decided to suppose, that they were dead.
All the people in the palace were miserable. Not only because the king and the queen were dead, but because little princess Midna would become their queen. She was so young. And annoying... She couldn't rule over the palace! That's why they still hoped the king and the queen would return someday.
But Midna wasn't sad. In fact... She was angry. But for some reason she wasn't breaking all sort of things around the palace. She was sitting in her room and nagging herself. "They left me alone!" she blamed her parents. "All alone!" the girl stood up made a little hole to a wall with dark energy. "But why should I care!" Midna continued talking to herself. For some reason, it made her feel better. "I can handle everything that happens all by myself!" the princess opened her window and yelled in the air: "You hear me, father?! I don't need you for anything!"
The princess was steaming ans all servants were afraid to get closer to her. But in that very same day, something really weird happened. Midna came out from her room and sat on her mother's throne. She wasn't smirking. Or even smiling. She seemed very calm and proud.
Like a queen.
The guardians in front of the hall's doors were confused. Was that the princess they knew?
"You!" said Midna and pointed another of the guardians. "Come over here!" The guardian came to the princess and bowed. "Yes, my lady?"
The princess took a deep breath and said: "Now... When my parents are gone, I am the queen. From now on, the people outside are MY people and everyone in this palace are MY servants." Her voice was surprising calm and cold as ice.
"Yes, of course, your majesty."
"And one more thing..." The new queen, Midna said. "Actually two... First... I want you to call me princess."
The guardian nodded waiting for the second "thing" Midna didn't let him wait for long. "And secondly... Entering the Twilight Mirror and the world behind it is forbidden." That was the first rule Midna set.
"Yes. As you want, princess."
"Wonderful, that you understood. Now, be gone."
And so the guardian left and told everyone about the new ruler and the new rule. Since that day, no-one entered the mirror.

Went ten years. Midna was an adult now. She had ruled over her kingdom surprising well. No-one complained or nagged. They just lived their life. Midna wasn't as stubborn as she used to be, but stubborn anyway. But now she was the one to yell. Her people outside the palace were happy, and so were the servants inside the palace.
Except one...

One morning Midna woke up to a loud noise. Something was broken. And that "something" wasn't just a vase. When Midna went to look, one of the palace's towers were crushed down to ground. And there, in the middle of the tower ruins, stood one of Midna's servants.
His name was Zant.
"Zant!" yelled Midna. "One tower's missing! How are you gonna explain that?!"
Zant wasn't listening. Midna felt he had changed. And saw it too. He had different clothes. Pretty nice, Midna thought but came back to reality. "Well?"
The man sighed. "I'm just so bored to listen your nagging..." Zant made a huge ball from the dark energy the people of twilight handled and threw it away. Another tower crushed. When did he came so powerful? Midna didn't even have time to ask what the heck was wrong with Zant, when the man decided to attack the princess herself.
So Midna attacked back.
They fought pretty long but suddenly, both of them were unharmed. They were now standing in the ruins of the palace. Midna was getting annoyed.
"Aww... Poor little Midna. And mother isn't here to help you!" Zant laughed. Midna spit into ground. "I don't need them!" the princess shouted. "I don't need any help! I can handle everything that happens all by myself!" She promised.
"Oh can you?" wondered Zant and smirked. "Then, handle this."
And then the princess fell down unconscious.

When Midna next time woke up, she wasn't in her palace. Actually... She was not in her world anymore. She was in the desert. Fast she stood up from the ground and then she noticed. She was much shorter. A little too much sorter. She looked at her little hands and legs. What in the world happened? It as Zant's doings, that's for sure, but how? Where did he get those powers?
Then Midna understood something else. If she wasn't in her world... In the world of Twilight. She was in the other side of the mirror. Midna looked around herself but all she saw was the place the mirror had used to be. It was gone. All gone.
Midna was filled with rage. She shouted out and made a ball of dark energy to throw it into a wall. Well, she made a ball. And threw it. But nothing happened. Midna didn't know what to do. She didn't even have her powers anymore!
She cursed Zant and filled her soul with the thirst for revenge and went along. In this world. There had to be a princess too.
It was hard for Midna to agree with herself, but this time... She couldn't handle it all by herself.
She needed help.
And here, we have a back story for Midna!
I don't know what should I say... Hope my English doesn't suck? :D
Seems like it hadn't but everything can happen ^^;

Hope ya like it~

I love it! ^_^ The way you wrote Midna's character when she was a child was perfect. XD And the way she changed and became the ruler but still kind of kept her old character at heart was cool too!
I have to admit, I laughed when Zant destroyed the tower. I can totally imagine that happening! XD
You know, now that I think about it, maybe Midna was supposed to be like a reflection/counterpart to Zelda... sorry, theorizing moment. XD
Awesome job! I hope you keep writing! ^_^
